Cousin · Pantheon, Rome
stepped rings
The rings of masonry stepped around the base of the Pantheon's dome.
From outside, the lower part of the Pantheon's dome climbs in a series of steps. These heavy rings load the base of the dome and help contain its outward thrust, the job flying buttresses later did for Gothic vaults.
